Just like changing the clocks, tax season is right around the corner. And in case we weren’t paying attention, the ads and emails have already started to pre-purchase tax software and forms. So as I read one of these emails today, I was surprised to see what business tax forms will cost, you know those 1096/1099 forms you have to file? One company wanted $74.99 plus shipping for 25 copies of the 1099 form. OK. Not me. I am determined to save money here. There must be a cheaper way.
Idea #1 – I remember when you used to be able to get tax forms at the US Post Office. Not so much anymore. Seems that with all of the cutbacks at the Post Office, tax forms were part of that. OK – on to idea #2 – the IRS. Remember them? After all, they actually produce the form! And not having ever gone this route, it was like opening a gift. Well, not really – and before you get too excited, keep in mind that 1099 forms from the IRS cannot be printed on a laser printer (Note: I called the IRS to confirm this). Due to the red ink, these forms must be handwritten, typed on an old-fashioned typewriter or printed on an inkjet printer. That said, I reviewed the many forms and quantities I could order, and all you have to do is complete the order form, submit your address and wait for the forms to arrive. While I have never done this before, there is a first time for everything. Even if I end up not receiving the forms, I am sure an office supply store will be offering a special I can take advantage to at least save a little money!
- Visit http://www.irs.gov/.
- Click on the Business tab.

- Click on Forms and Publications

- Scroll down to Order and select one of the first two options – either order by US Mail or order online.

- Fill in the quantity you want for 1096 and 1099 forms. The 1096 is the master transmittal form you will need that includes the total of the 1099 forms you completed. (Note: order extra because it is always a good idea to be “prepared” – for mistakes!) When you have input the quantity, scroll to the bottom and click on “Add to Cart”.

- Verify all of the information is correct and click Checkout.

- Complete the shipping information and click continue.

- Confirm the shipping information and click Confirm.

- Once you click Confirm, you have placed the order for the forms – at no charge – and they will be shipped to you when they are ready! So you saved the cost of the forms and the cost of time and gas! Coupons can’t beat that!!! For more information on tax forms, please consult the IRS website.
